Happiness for Beginners is a 2023 American romantic comedy film based on Katherine Center’s 2015 novel of the same name.
The story follows Helen (Ellie Kemper) as she embarks on an Appalachian Trail survivalist course after going through a divorce. During the course, she meets Jake (Luke Grimes), who happens to be a friend of her younger brother. As they navigate the challenges of the wilderness, they may also discover unexpected romance.
The movie stars Ellie Kemper and Luke Grimes, the cast includes talented actors such as Nico Santos, Blythe Danner, Ben Cook, Shayvawn Webster, Esteban Benito, Gus Birney, Julia Shiplett, and Alexander Koch.
Vicky Wight, who previously directed an adaptation of another Katherine Center novel, The Lost Husband, co-wrote the screenplay with Katherine Center herself. The film was directed by Vicky Wight, produced by Vicky Wight, Geoff Linville, and Berry Meyerowitz, with Katherine Center, Jeff Sackman, and Larry Greenberg serving as executive producers. Cranetown Media worked on the project, and principal photography wrapped up in November 2021 in Stamford, Connecticut.
The film is set to premiere on July 27, 2023, exclusively on Netflix.
