Eileen is a 2023 American period psychological thriller film directed by William Oldroyd and based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Ottessa Moshfegh. The screenplay was adapted by Ottessa Moshfegh herself along with Luke Goebel.
The story is set in 1960s Boston and revolves around a parasitic relationship between two women working at a juvenile detention facility. Eileen, played by Thomasin McKenzie, is a prison worker, and her life takes a turn when a captivating and glamorous counselor named Rebecca, portrayed by Anne Hathaway, arrives on the scene. Rebecca seems to help Eileen explore new aspects of her personality, but there’s a sense of danger lurking beneath their relationship.
The film also stars Shea Whigham, Owen Teague, Marin Ireland, Jefferson White, Tonye Patano, Siobhan Fallon-Hogan, and Sam Nivola.
The production companies involved in making the movie are Fifth Season, Film4 Productions, Likely Story, Lost Winds Entertainment, and Omniscient Productions. The budget for the film was $15 million.
Eileen had its premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival on 21st January 2023. It is scheduled to have a limited theatrical release in the United States starting on 1st December 2023, distributed by Neon, and then expand nationwide on 8th December 2023.
