Barbie is a 2023 American fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach. Based on the Barbie fashion dolls by Mattel, it marks the first live-action Barbie film following numerous computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television films. The movie revolves around Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) as they embark on a journey of self-discovery after facing an existential crisis. The ensemble supporting cast includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.
The idea for a live-action Barbie film was initially announced by Universal Pictures in September 2009, with Laurence Mark as the producer. Development began in April 2014 when Sony Pictures acquired the film rights. After going through multiple changes in writers, directors, and casting, including considering Amy Schumer and later Anne Hathaway for the role of Barbie, the rights were eventually transferred to Warner Bros. Pictures in October 2018. Margot Robbie was cast in the lead role in 2019, and Greta Gerwig was announced as the director and co-writer alongside Noah Baumbach in 2021. The remaining cast members were announced in early 2022. Filming primarily took place at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, in England, and the Venice Beach Skatepark in Los Angeles from March to July 2022.
Barbie was produced by Heyday Films, LuckyChap Entertainment, NB/GG Pictures, and Mattel Films, and it was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Barbie had its premiere at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on 9th July 2023, and was theatrically released in the United States on 21st July 21 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
